Our picky-ish eating era

If there’s one thing I grossly underestimated about becoming a parent, it’s just how much time I would have to spend feeding kids.

I design my day around when my toddler has to eat (and sleep — but mostly eat).

While he was always a relatively good eater, the closer we got to 2 years old, the more he started to deny the broccoli shavings I was adding to his scrambled eggs each morning.

And so began our picky-ish eating era.

Some nights he asks for second and third servings of his carrots. Other nights, good luck trying to feed him anything but toast and waffles.

But we keep fighting the good fight

I quickly learned that the more I push it, the worse it gets.

We soldier on. We still make the broccoli. We still try to sell him on sweet potatoes.

Sometimes, he bites. Sometimes, we resort to offering him a cookie bribe if he eats more of his dinner (I know, I know).

We haven’t given up.

But some nights, we need an easy out. And that’s when I lean into smoothies, or as my toddler would say, “smoo-ies.

Frozen kale blended and disguised with frozen fruit, yogurt, and bananas is almost always a win — and it makes dinnertime peaceful.

Deploying our secret weapon

Now, I have been dabbling with Hiya’s Kids Daily Greens + Superfoods powder to supercharge his smoothies.

I feel less guilty about “cheating” toddler dinnertime because he’s still consuming so many good nutrients.

I know it’s not a 1:1 replacement for eating his actual greens, but it’s a really great option when we just can’t deal with negotiating dinner.

A dietitian’s take

Meet our expert

Kelli McGrane is a registered dietitian with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Nutritional Science from Boston University. She has nearly 10 years of experience reviewing and recommending dietary supplements.

She has worked as nutrition editor, a clinical dietitian at two Boston hospitals, and a nutrition researcher for the University of Colorado and Children’s Hospital.

What she says about the greens powder

“Unlike most greens powders, Hiya Daily Greens is specifically designed with types and amounts of ingredients that are safe for kids.

“It provides 50% of the DV of vitamin D for kids ages 2 to 3 years old.

“I was pleasantly surprised. I like that this product only includes recognizable whole foods, like Brussels sprouts and beets.

“Just keep in mind that while the powder may provide an extra boost of nutrition to your kid’s diet, it isn’t meant to be a replacement for whole fruits and vegetables.”

What she likes about the brand

Hiya’s products are made without sugar, artificial dyes, additives, and preservatives. They’re also free of major allergens and produced in a peanut-free facility.

Hiya’s facilities are current good manufacturing practices (CGMP) certified and located in the United States.

Its products are also third-party tested by accredited labs for evidence of heavy metals, allergens, and pathogens as well as purity and potency of the ingredients to ensure the correct amount are included.

Bonus fun: sticker kit!
